Lincroft (Monmouth County, NJ) - Although slavery is illegal everywhere in the world, there are currently 27 million slaves on six of the continents. In the U.S alone there are 14,500 to 17,500 slaves trafficked in to the country each year, according to governmental statistics. These slaves are forced to work without pay under threat of violence and are unable to walk away. The average cost of a human slave today, cited at freetheslaves.net, is $90 compared to the average cost in 1850 of $40,000. The number of slaves in the world is currently at an all-time high.

The Holocaust, Genocide & Human Rights Education Center in conjunction with Students for Global Peace and the Creative Writing Club of Brookdale Community College invite you to join in a Valentine's Day Campaign to abolish slavery. Chocolate, candy and flowers have become such a cliché. What better way to say ‘I love you,' than to help save a life?

According to the National Retail Foundation and BIG Research, Americans spent close to $17 billion on Valentine's Day in 2008. E. Benjamin Skinner, author of A Crime So Monstrous: Face-to-Face with Modern-Day Slavery, stated that is enough money to free and rehabilitate all 27 million slaves.

This campaign is designed to help stop slavery in our time by encouraging people to visit freetheslaves.net and click on Donate Today on the homepage. Individuals can fill out the registration form, and include Brookdale in the comments box. After selecting "Donate Now," donors will receive a receipt from freetheslaves.net. If that receipt is forwarded to holo-center@brookdalecc.edu with the donor's name and address in the body of the email, they will receive a specially designed Valentine's Day card to give to a loved one. Or it can be picked up at the Holocaust, Genocide & Human Rights Education Center at the Brookdale Community College Lincroft campus.
